MATCH REPORT: CAMBY STAY TOP AFTER A HOME WIN OVER FREW

Cambuslang Rangers went into this game in good form having won the previous 6 out of the 7 fixtures played with opponents Renfrew sitting 5 points behind the league leaders.

The match started off at a steady pace as both sides gradually grew into the game. Early chances were squandered as both sides failed to register an attempt on target in the opening 20 minutes until academy graduate Jay Nelson got himself in behind the Renfrew back line off the left hand side and rifled the ball into the goal to open the scoring for the Lang.

The lead would only last for 2 minutes however as Ciaran Driver equalised for the visitors after lobbing the onrushing goalkeeper, Fermin Jiminez from 12 yards out.

The events continued to unfold as shortly after Gordon Dick’s protests about the Renfrew goal being onside he found himself challenging for the ball on the ground with a Renfrew midfielder as the referee ruled it a red card worthy offence.

The match continued to unfold as Cambuslang Rangers pushed forward to try and get themselves back into the lead and in the 36th minute they did just that when a good run from Scott Williamson down the left allowed him to cut inside and slot the ball into the bottom right corner for his tenth goal of the campaign to make it 2-1 for the Lang.

Williamson continued to attack as he beat the defender with his pace but his final effort of the half was deflected into the side-netting and out for a Cambuslang corner in the 40th minute.

There was time for more action as Camby right back, Alan Reid picked up a booking shortly before the referee called for the half time interval.

As the teams returned to action it would be Renfrew who created the first chance of the second period as an effort from outside the box was gathered by Jiminez before Cambuslang themselves broke forward and some nice link up play from Nelson & Williamson forced a late pressure from the Renfrew defense and Nelson's final attempt couldn't find the target after being closed down quickly.

In the 65th minute Cambuslang would come close to grabbing another after a Jay Nelson corner was met by the head of Ryan Frances but the attempt was cleared off the line.

In the 73rd minute Williamson found himself with a golden chance to find another brace as he broke in behind the Renfrew back line but he was stopped initially by the goalkeeper's right foot before the retreating defender blocked Williamson's follow-up shot.

Scott Williamson again found himself among the action as some terrific play down the left followed by a wonderful lofted ball was struck by Gary Griffin but it was turned wide by the outstretched leg of the goalkeeper.

Almost instantly afterwards Cambuslang Rangers were awarded a penalty after the ball was clearly handled on the goal line. Scott Anson would be the one to step up and his right footed effort came off the post and into the Renfrew net to make it 3-1 to the table topping Lang.

Just three minutes later Williamson was replaced by John Gemmell who made an instant impact as he shifted the ball between his feet to beat the defender and finessed the ball into the goal for 4-1.

There was time for a Kieran Christie cameo as he replaced Jay Nelson as well as a long range effort from Tony Stevenson which drifted wide before the referee called an end to proceedings with Cambuslang taking all 3 points.
